Louise Stewart has been a trustee of YMCA North Tyneside for the last 3 years. Following the success of last year’s Great North Run, the board of trustee’s discussed how they could increase the number of people running for us, in order to raise our profile.  Louise said,

“In a moment of weakness I agreed to it! I also managed to persuade several other friends, family and people from my running club to run for us. This made a huge difference to my determination.”

As a first time participant of the Great North Run Louise had to start from scratch with training but did a brilliant job of throwing herself into the experience!

“I only started running in January this year!  I joined a local running club, who were a huge support.  I soon gained confidence and stamina and took part in the local park runs. Lowlights have been when it’s cold and wet and dragging myself round a training run.  I am definitely a fair weather runner! My highlight was knocking 7 minutes off my first park run time! I then ventured into 10k runs.  With work and family I found it difficult to get time to get the long runs in.  However I met some lovely people at the running club, who have the same issue and we managed to squeeze in some early or late runs!”

When we asked Louise about her experience on the day she said,

“I was so nervous all week before the GNR!  However when I arrived at the start the nerves calmed and adrenaline kicked in.  I was overwhelmed by the support of people along the way, people lined the streets for the majority of the course. With the bands playing and people cheering you on, you can’t help but enjoy it.  My husband ran with me for the first 10k and that really helped to have someone to keep me going.  Though it was so hot and I don’t think I would have made it over the finish line without the ice pop from a kind supporter at mile 10! It was a huge relief to cross the finish line and I still can’t quite believe I did it, though the pain in my legs reminds me I have!”

Louise told us a little bit about her experience of fundraising and the support she and her team have received.

“Everyone has been a huge support with the fundraising, it was a huge help to get round the course on the day with the knowledge that there were so many people supporting us and pledging their hard earned cash for such a worthy cause. I have seen first-hand where the money is spent at the YMCA, the supported accommodation in particular has made a huge difference to so many young people and I am proud to be part of it!”

Will Louise be running and raising for YMCA North Tyneside again?

“ABSOLUTELY!”

We can’t thank Louise and her team enough for their amazing efforts in raising a whopping £1478! Please continue to give as much as you can and donate anything you can afford by following the link below.
