Norham High School and YMCA take to the seas!

In September 2016, YMCA North Tyneside organised a sailing trip for a group of young people from Norham School. The day trip with Ocean Youth Trust was made possible through a grant provided by ASDAN to support the development of young learners. The trip offered the opportunity to take to the high seas on a day long sailing expedition.

The group began at the Royal Quays, North Shields. They boarded the James Cook, a 70ft sailing boat, and after getting geared up with waterproofs and life jackets, it was time to set sail. The group learned how to tie different kinds of knots and prepared the boat for sea. They then had to work as a team to hoist the sails and set off down the Tyne and out to Sea. Some initial sea sickness and a few buckets later, people started to find their sea legs! Everybody had a turn at steering the boat, navigating past other boats and ships.

One of our youth workers Hannah Birkbeck who accompanied and provided support on the expedition said:

“It was a new experience for most of the young people and everybody really got into it, working together and trying things they’d never done before.”

With everybody feeling more confident about their sailing skill the group took the lead, turning the boat around and steering it back on to the Tyne and back to land.

“The confidence that these sort of experiences give young people is invaluable. We can’t thank ASDAN and Ocean Youth Trust enough. We are looking forward to developing more opportunities to contribute to the development of local young people, through our partnership working with schools like Norham High School.”

Steve Pugh, Head of Operations at YMCA North Tyneside.
