Looking out the window from the top floor of our building, you would be forgiven for thinking the weather was a lot warmer than it is. The sunshine streaming through our windows and the central heating is keeping us all nice and warm here at YMCA North Tyneside.
But for so many this is not how the day will end, and certainly not how they will wake up tomorrow morning. In 2015, government statistics showed that the number of people sleeping rough on any one night across England was approximately 3569 – this is almost double the figure recorded in 2010. That figure is set to rise.
growing problem of youth homelessness in the North East.Â Through our fundraising for homeless young people with our annual SleepEasy event and the Great North Run team – both raising over Â£5000 each – they have contributed massively to us being able to create three emergency bedsits in our main building. The bedsits are temporary accommodation for young people who for safeguarding purposes, are in need of immediate housing whether at 2pm in the afternoon or 2am in the early hours of the morning.
