YMCA North Tyneside took a fantastic team of 24 fantastic people to this years Great North Run. They joined 60,000 runners in the worlds biggest half marathon, and so far have raised over£7000, with money still coming in.
People come from all over the world to take part in the event that has become synonymous with the North East. The range of people from all walks of life, all age groups and all abilities that dedicate themselves to the 13.1 mile challenge is part of what makes it so famous and so special to be a part of.
One of our amazing employees, Andrea Follin, who has worked in our Housing department for 18 months said,
“The day of the Great North run is always packed with emotion not just from achieving personal goals, but also seeing why other people are taking part. It would be great if our young people were more involved so other runners can see the great work we all do and how much potential and talent our young people have.”
Another of our runners, David Jensen said,
“It was my first run and an amazing experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere. I achieved my goal of running the whole distance without stopping.”
The money from fundraising events like this one goes directly towards the development and building of new housing and supported accommodation.
We currently have 6 bedsits in central North Shields that are now completed and are being allocated to young people. We are also in the process of finishing off the 6 brand new and redeveloped apartments within our main building on Church Way. This means that within the next few weeks we will be housing 12 additional young people, who would otherwise be spending Christmas sofa-surfing or worse, on the streets.
This year 6 of our runners were YMCA staff, which included one runner, Gavin Broadhead who came all the way from YMCA Goole to take part said,
“I’m really glad I got to raise money for YMCA! As a Night Duty Officer for YMCA Goole I’m fully aware of the fantastic work that we do. Despite the fact Goole is a small branch, we still have a really positive impact. I often try to inspire our residents to keep fit which will help improve their quality of life. Great North Run is an amazing experience, thanks to YMCA North Tyneside for letting me join their team, I hope I have put YMCA Goole on the map too!”
Some of our runners made their way to the charity village afterwards for a (gentle) pat on the back, a well earned drink and a sit down. While there we asked them to tell us how they felt. Have a look through the gallery below to see what people had to say and at some of the great pictures that were captured on the day.
