Norham High School teacher Sean Harris has taken part in the Great North Run 4 times, but this year is the first time he has run in aid of YMCA North Tyneside.
“I decided to raise funds for YMCA North Tyneside because, as a school, we believe that their work is vitally important. We are a school that cares passionately about local people and local issues. Youth homelessness is something that we want to help tackle as a school and yet, even with sound academic grades, a number of lifestyle, circumstances and social issues can lead to a young person facing the harsh reality of homelessness. With this in mind, we wanted to commit to supporting our local YMCA team and use the event to help raise pupil awareness about homelessness. We have so much to be proud about in the North East but it is the people of the North East that come out to cheer the runners that really make the day. If so many people can come to support the runners, then this is testimony of how much people can embrace local issues and help to support the work of organisations such as YMCA North Tyneside.”
This year Sean’s fundraising efforts were a little bit special. Not only did he complete the half marathon as part of a team of staff from Norham High School, but he also completed the Junior Great North Run with his 4 year old daughter Naomi who was dressed as ‘Wonder Girl’ while he donned a Captain America costume and shield.
When we asked Sean about his experience of running this year he described overtaking Batman on the final mile as a real highlight. Speaking about the diversity of participants, Sean said he felt “…inspired by heroic people who could have chosen to see their own disabilities and suffering as barriers; yet instead, they chose to overcome said barriers in order to run the event.”
Huge thanks to both Sean and Naomi for their fantastic fundraising efforts, incredible costumes and infectious enthusiasm.
“I’m running to help those boys and girls that don’t have a home daddy.” Naomi Harris – Aged 4.
