It’s time for real change. Support the Homelessness Reduction Bill!

The current statistics around homelessness in the UK are incredibly worrying. On any one night in England 3569 people are sleeping rough. These statistics from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) show a 30% increase since 2014 and more than double the number recorded in 2010.

Something needs to change.

On Friday 28th October 2016, St Mungo’s will be presenting the second reading of the Homelessness Reduction Bill to parliament. The full details of which can be found by following the link below.

The changes that are being proposed would see people being eligible for help sooner and local authorities providing clearer and more significant advice and information. Part of this would see services that are designed to work with people who are at particular risk of homelessness through working with local and voluntary organisations. Organisations like ours perhaps? We would like to show as much support as we can for this reform and change suggested in the Homelessness Reduction Bill…

So what can YOU do to help support this?

You can write to your local MP and Councillors, asking them to support the changes. Ask them to attend the reading on the 28th October. Share your concerns about the rise in homelessness and what it means for our local communities and the cost to the already stretched public services including the police and the NHS. If you are not sure who your local MP is then you can find out by following the link below.
