As part of our Strategy for 2025 and Beyond, we are committed to providing more youth and community engagement by actively responding to local need. A prime example of this strategy in action is the work of our Evenwood Young Volunteers. What began as a fundraising initiative quickly grew into a social action project, demonstrating exactly what happens when we empower young people to take the lead in their local area.
The project started with a straightforward goal: the young people wanted to plan and organise an event to raise money for their youth group. However, as they began to map out the logistics, their focus shifted towards a more pressing local issue. Recognising that the festive season can be an incredibly lonely time for many, they decided to elevate their original concept. The primary aim of their project transformed into bringing the Evenwood community together to celebrate Christmas, with a specific focus on reducing the social isolation felt by local residents.
The result of their hard work was a highly successful community Christmas Tea Party. The young volunteers took full ownership of the event, managing everything from the initial planning stages to the execution on the day. Crucially, they made a deliberate and compassionate decision to reach out to those most at risk of feeling disconnected. This included extending a special invitation to residents of a local care home who have complex care needs. By ensuring these individuals were welcomed, included, and catered for, the youth group successfully bridged a generational gap and created a fully inclusive, supportive environment.
By taking the lead on this community-focused project, the Young Volunteers developed their leadership and organisational skills. Having seen the direct, positive impact of their hard work, their personal confidence increased beyond measure.
