Two National Wins, One Incredible Night
On November 14th, we brought two major YMCA Youth Matters Awards home to North Tyneside!
Lexi Coltman (12) secured Young Campaigner of the Year for her fearless advocacy in LGBTQIA+ visibility and neurodiversity. Judges praised her for “fostering a sense of belonging” and driving meaningful change.
Nahreen Hasib and Leoni Lannen, on behalf of The Happy Women Project, won the Diversity Award, recognised for providing a “safe and brave space” for migrant and asylum-seeking women to build confidence and independence in the UK.
These wins validate the hard work of our team and the profound impact of our community programmes.
We’re Trialling 100-80-100
We are setting ourselves apart as a premier employer with our internal 100-80-100 trial. By prioritising wellbeing and productivity, we ensure our team is energised to deliver exceptional support to our stakeholders.
100-80-100 is a model where staff receive 100% of pay for working 80% of contracted hours, whilst providing 100% productivity.
By July 2026, all of our teams will have been phased onto the 100-80-100 trial and will hopefully be finding that their work-life balance and their productivity at work will have improved.

A Fantastic Celebration of Culture
Known as the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, Eid al-Adha is one of the most significant holidays in Islam and is celebrated by nearly 2 billion people across the world, which is nearly equivalent to 25% of the world’s population.
At YMCA North Tyneside, we wish to promote reflection, gratitude and also time for others…
Harvey: Our Young Hero
We are absolutely bursting with pride to announce that Harvey, a dedicated volunteer at our Willington Quay Kids Club, has been nominated for a BBC Make a Difference Award in the Young Hero category!
At just 15 years old, Harvey is already proving that age is no barrier to making an impact…

2 Heartwarming Meals
Christmas, for many, is a wonderful time of the year for spending with family and friends, feasting on great food and exchanging gifts. But for some who are facing loneliness or struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis, the day looks very different…
The Infrared Transformation at Lipscomb Hall
In the heart of Teesdale, the Cockfield Community Cafe at Lipscomb Hall has long been a vital sanctuary. Whether it’s providing affordable hot meals through the YMCA or serving as a gathering point for the local church congregation, the hall is a cornerstone of community life. However, for years, the building faced a persistent, literal chill: an aging 18th-century structure reliant on inefficient electric storage heaters…
In Quarter 2, YMCA North Tyneside provided 5,539 safe nights for vulnerable resident. This means over 68 residents woke up every single morning in a stable, secure environment where they could access the support they needed to rebuild their lives.
We are growing! The ‘Offer More Homes’ strategic priority is already delivering new places to live across the North East. We’re adding 2 new self-contained properties in North Shields, Stockton, and Scarborough. A direct investment in more futures.
Behind every statistic is a life that’s been transformed. In Quarter 2, 6 young people made a positive transition to independent living, and we hear daily how a safe home is the first step to a fresh start.
After a year in a hostel, Liam arrived isolated and in a cycle of constant mental health crisis, deeply rooted in childhood trauma. His biggest struggle was managing money, which triggered self-destructive behaviour. YMCA stepped in and encouraged Liam to believe in himself and his ability to realise his triggers and cope better with his mental health.
Aidan arrived at the YMCA after months of street homelessness, sleeping in a cold shed but determined not to miss a day of school. Our supported housing provided the safety and stability he needed to heal and focus. Read how YMCA North Tyneside helped Aidan thrive.
For four years, Sarah was caught in a cycle of homelessness, trauma, and addiction, unable to access basic healthcare or housing. Her biggest barrier? A historical “arson” flag from an accidental fire—a non-conviction that caused every other housing provider to refuse her help. The YMCA looked past the label and saw a person in crisis.
Thanks to the growth of our housing, we’ve been able to reinvest surplus into funding Gemma’s role, allowing us to support our residents even further.
For young people in our supported accommodation, developing independent living skills is a critical step toward a successful transition out of our services. Our residents often face complex challenges, which can make everyday tasks difficult. This is where Gemma steps in.
