At 50 years old, Karl was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his pelvic bed. The necessary treatments, surgery to remove his prostate combined with intensive hormone therapy, took a significant physical toll.
For Karl, the hardest part of the treatment fallout was the loss of his physical capabilities. The resulting fatigue and loss of conditioning meant he could no longer participate in the active, family-oriented lifestyle he loved. His primary goal was clear but daunting: he wanted to regain the strength and mobility necessary to keep up with his family and enjoy life together again.
Karl joined our Cancer Exercise Rehabilitation Programme and was paired with Steve, a Specialist Cancer Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor. Because treatments like hormone therapy can cause fluctuating energy levels and unpredictable fatigue, Karl needed a programme that was highly adaptable.
Steve designed a tailored regimen that focused on safely rebuilding Karl’s foundation. Rather than pushing through exhaustion, Steve took a flexible approach, assessing Karl’s energy levels at the start of every single session and adjusting the day’s workload accordingly. This ensured Karl was always exercising in a safe, supportive, and optimal zone for recovery.
Through steady, carefully monitored progression, Karl made massive strides in his physical resilience. Starting with foundational bodyweight exercises, he successfully rebuilt enough upper and lower body strength to progress to lifting kettlebells.
He also saw huge gains in his cardiovascular fitness. By using a steep incline on the treadmill, Karl significantly improved his walking endurance and stamina. Today, Karl has successfully reclaimed his physical fitness and is finally back to enjoying an active life with his family.
Steve has a good feel for how I felt on the day, and adjusts accordingly, all with a smile. I now feel fit enough to get back into being active again.
