In late March, the YMCA North Tyneside community space was transformed. As part of our NS800 funding, young people from our Youth Group teamed up with local artist Bobby Colvin (better known as Sick Styles) to design and execute a vibrant new mural on the building’s third floor.
The project began with a simple but profound question: “What does North Shields mean to you today?” Following a high-energy brainstorming session, the group drafted their ideas, which Bobby helped distill into a single visual concept. With a touch of artistic license and plenty of North Tyneside pride, they landed on a scene set at dusk on the Fish Quay sands. The mural features a young person fishing, surrounded by a mix of the town’s most iconic symbols:

We were delighted to collaborate with Bobby Colvin, the talent behind Sick Styles. Based right on Howard Street, Bobby knows every corner of North Shields like the back of his hand.
For our Youth Group, working alongside a time-served professional gave them the chance to explore their own creativity, learn technical spray-painting and design skills, and see their ideas come to life on a grand scale.
Ultimately, this mural is a tribute to the deep-rooted heritage of North Shields. By blending our nautical history and traditional fishing roots with the lived experience of youth today, the piece celebrates the town through the eyes of the people who will shape its future.
Next time you’re on the third floor, come take a look at our slice of North Shields!
