Housing Case Study: Jay’s Journey to Health

Housing Case Study: Jay’s Journey to Health

Before coming to the YMCA, “Jay” (name changed to protect anonymity) spent two years without a settled base. As a care leaver, his living situation was highly unstable, consisting of periods of street homelessness, sofa surfing, and stays in unsuitable emergency accommodation. These environments exposed him to high-risk situations and dangerous individuals, which served as major triggers for substance misuse. Without a safe space to call his own, Jay found himself trapped in a cycle of instability and struggled with opiate dependency.

Finding Stability at YMCA

Jay moved into the YMCA in April 2026. From the beginning, he expressed a sense of relief at finally securing supportive accommodation away from the triggers and negative peer influences of his past emergency housing. Providing him with a secure, quiet environment was the critical first step in his recovery.

Since his arrival, staff have said Jay is consistently polite, respectful of his neighbors and the staff, and takes pride in his living space, keeping his flat clean and tidy without the need for support cleans. Crucially, he has established healthy boundaries, ensuring that negative influences from his past do not have access to his property, while actively building friendships with positive peers within YMCA.

Support and Progress

Jay has fully engaged with the support network available to him, actively listening to advice from his support workers and asks for help when he needs it. YMCA has worked closely with him to coordinate external support, helping him engage with the local drug and alcohol service, local council, and Beyond Housing.

A major focus of Jay’s current support plan is his health. He is actively progressing through an opiate detox programme. Though the detox process is challenging, he has remained positive and determined, driven by a crucial goal: completing the detox is a medical requirement before he can undergo a much-needed heart procedure. Staff have provided him with continuous emotional support, guidance, and signposting to food banks and other necessary agencies to keep him nourished and focused on his recovery.

Looking to the Future

Jay is now focused on the next chapter of his life and is preparing to move on to independent living. YMCA staff use their weekly one-on-one link sessions to actively support him in bidding on properties through Beyond Housing. When Jay does secure his “forever home,” YMCA will continue to provide outreach support for his first few weeks of independent living while he undergoes his heart operation and settles into his new life.

When asked what the best part of his time at the YMCA has been, Jay shared:

“The support from staff, making new friends, and a quiet environment to settle into.”

Looking ahead, his goals are clear and focused:

“To be clean, have my heart procedure, and to find a home of my own.”
