On Wednesday the 9th of April the football pitch at the Parks turned into a battleground—not of rivals, but of friendly fire as our North Shields Youth Group faced off against the YMCA Staff Team in what can only be described as a match for the ages (and possibly some ice packs). There are football matches… and then there are legendary showdowns that go down in history. The pitch was set, the crowd was buzzing, and both teams had one thing in mind: victory.
From the first whistle, it was clear – the young people came to play. Speed, agility, and some fancy footwork had the staff scrambling in the first half. A thunderbolt goal by Carter sent the young people into a frenzy.
But the staff weren’t going down without a fight. Fuelled by pride (and maybe a bit of caffeine), they came back in the second half with a slick passing and tackling game.
As the final whistle blew, the score was 8-3 to the young people, but the debate is still raging. Some say the youth had a goal disallowed “for reasons still unknown.” Others argue the staff were robbed of a penalty in the dying minutes. Either way, no VAR here—just lots of laughs and a few sore legs.
After the final whistle, everyone came together for high-fives, laughs, and a few much-needed bottles of water. Regardless of the scoreline, it was clear: team spirit, fun, and community were the real winners.
This wouldn’t have been possible without funding from NLCF Million Hours which enabled us to get the North Shields Youth Group launched; providing a safe space for young people to come together, engage in positive, diversionary activities and belong!
