Join our dedicated team at the heart of the community, where every cup of coffee and meal served helps people thrive! Our Community Café at Lipscomb Hall, Cockfield, Teesdale, is more than just a place to eat; it’s an inclusive hub that provides healthy, delicious, and incredibly affordable food (from breakfast and lunch to barista coffee and cakes) while fostering hope, connection, and growth.
As a Community Café Assistant, you’ll be key to ensuring the experience for every customer, volunteer, and learner is truly exceptional. You will work alongside and inspire learners pursuing catering and hospitality qualifications, volunteers, apprentices, and those gaining work experience. This role isn’t just about technical skills; it’s about using your passion for food and people to serve with love and empower others to believe in their potential.

A Passionate & Skilled Cook: You should have experience working in a respected café or catering environment and possess the ability (or a strong willingness to learn) to prepare and cook meals from scratch. You should hold a relevant food hygiene certificate (or a strong willingness to achieve this).

Support Day-to-Day Operations: Work closely with the team to deliver food and drink, upholding exceptional standards of cleanliness, quality, and availability of food and drink, cashing up, record keeping, and other essential tasks (e.g., stock taking, preparing food, banking) to keep the café thriving.

Job Description
In this role you will be managing the day-to-day running of our community cafe, based at Lipscomb Hall, Cockfield, Teesdale. The role of Café Supervisor is to deliver service at an appropriately high standard, and ultimately to ensure that the café achieves a financially sustainable income to help support YMCAs charitable objectives.
If successful, your main responsibilities as the Cafe Supervisor is to oversee the staff and delivery of the high levels of service at the Community Cafe in Cockfield. This includes;
Team management
Team leadership responsibilities including professional development of team, training, one to ones and some HR responsibilities.
To line manage the Cafe Assistants and support them to deliver a high level of service expected at YMCA Community Cafe.
To provide staff with rotas on a regular basis ensuring that there is adequate cover on all shifts while adhering to the budget.
Responsibility for the day to day Health and Safety of the staff and customers within the cafe.
To build relationships with staff so they feel valued members of the team.
Community Cafe Service and Development
To create a welcoming cafe environment that people actively seek out, because of the quality of both the food and customer service they receive.
To review, challenge and innovate: looking for new ways to improve the experience of Community Cafe.
To demonstrate the values of YMCA at all times
To take responsibility for the management of the environment, including cleanliness.
To manage the processes for stock and reordering of items specific to the café.
Support the Community Manager in the delivery of the Café’s trading, development and marketing plans to deliver income targets.
Support the Community Manager in driving cost efficiencies through e.g. reviewing supplier prices, improving procedures, optimising staff costs (relative to total turnover) and improving profitability on food and drink lines.
To support the management of the Community Cafe social media accounts and agree with the Community Manager / Youth and Community Lead what content is to be posted.
To develop, with support from Community Manager and Youth and Community Lead offers that encourage new customers into the cafe.

To be successful, it is essential that you have relevant experience/ relevant qualifications in customer service/ catering and training and continued professional development.
