Ullswater Challenge 2024
Ullswater holds a special place in the heart of everyone associated with YMCA North Tyneside, being the water that our Patterdale Estate is connected to. The Estate was bequeathed to us in 1850 by North Shields philanthropist Roland Lishman who was a long standing member of the YMCA. By taking part in Ullswater Challenge you have the opportunity to continue the good will of Roland Lishman through a 20 mile trek around the perimeter of the water that ties the beauty of the Lake District to our own community in North Shields.
Your fundraising efforts will go directly towards our ‘Opportunities for All’ bursary that provides disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive through access to education and enrichment opportunities. We have put a fundraising goal of £100 for this challenge but feel free to exceed this! Remember, any sponsorship, big or small, can make a huge impact on the lives of young people.

Challenge & Fundraising FAQs
What is the Fundraising Cause?
This challenge will raise money towards our Opportunities for All bursary that provides disadvantaged young people with enrichment opportunities
What is the minimum age to take part?
We are aware that families would love to take part, but due to the length of the walk, we don’t think it is suitable for those under the age of 16.
How fit do I need to be to take part?
You will need a basic level of fitness, regular training walks are advised to ensure you are fit enough to take on the challenge (and to ensure you actually enjoy it!).
What is the route like?
The Ullswater way is a mostly flat route around the lake with stunning scenery and a mountainous backdrop. Towards the end of the route there will be a slight climb from Pooley Bridge to Aira Force before you descend back towards Patterdale. The ground will be a mixture of gravel/stone and tarmac.
Do I bring food and water?
We advise that you take several snacks and a packed lunch. It will be a long physical day and you will need the energy to keep going. There will be snacks and water available around the route but we do advise packing plenty of food. We recommend taking 2 litres of water with you.
What footwear shall I wear?
Walking boots/shoes are preferred as they will give your feet full support. If you have no walking boots/shoes, a good pair of sports trainers will do nicely but please don’t wear fashionable shoes like Uggs or Converse, they won’t support your feet and could give you blisters.
Travel, parking and accomodation?
We have limited parking available at Patterdale Estate and there is free parking in Glenridden. There is potential for car sharing/mini bus hire but arrangements will be made closer to the event. Challengers will also have the option to book a stay at the Estate for a discounted price.
