John* arrived at the YMCA following challenging experiences at previous placements.

He was grappling with his mental health, but through our support, he’s now aware of his position on the waiting list for refugee trauma-based counseling, thanks to assistance with GP appointments and collaboration with the Refugee Council.

Initially, John expressed a strong dislike for the area, often resorting to negative behaviors. However, as trust and rapport with staff grew, he learned healthier coping mechanisms, leading to a significant reduction in incidents. Now, John “doesn’t mind this area now” and is actively building a network of friends while familiarising himself with the neighbourhood.

John’s initial reluctance to interact with staff has dramatically transformed. He regularly visits the office to seek guidance and direction, demonstrating increased respect towards the team. Recognising that boredom negatively impacted his mental health, staff collaborated with John to create a structured daily routine, including flat and shared kitchen cleaning, gym sessions, cricket participation, and college attendance. John acknowledges the positive impact this structure has on his well-being and looks forward to the future with newfound optimism.
