Sometimes, the impact of local support can reach far beyond our own community. YMCA North Tyneside recently had the privilege of contributing to the Association of Youth Work Studies (AYWS) in Zambia, a donation that will directly support the training of future youth workers.
The story began with a connection, made by Don, a good friend of YMCA who shares dedication to youth development. As Frezer Ngosa, Secretary of AYWS, explained, “The organisation is making significant progress and will soon be able to roll out its first training programme for youth workers.” This is a crucial step for AYWS, as they work to empower young people in Zambian villages
The work being done by AYWS is truly impactful. “It is reaching out to children and young people in the villages and is engaging numerous volunteers who want to make a difference and help to tackle Aids and teenage pregnancy, etc.” This highlights the vital role youth workers play in addressing critical issues within their communities.

The need for resources, specifically textbooks and equipment, was clear. Despite facing pressures within our own youth sector, YMCA North Tyneside recognised the importance of supporting this initiative. By providing essential resources, we’re helping to equip future youth workers with the knowledge and skills they need to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people in Zambia.
The response from AYWS was one of deep gratitude. “We are writing to express our heartfelt gratitude as the Association for Youth Work Studies for the financial contribution rendered. Your contribution will make a significant impact on the growth of the Association.” The donation is a reminder that even across vast distances, shared values and a commitment to youth development can create meaningful change.
