Laurie’s journey with the YMCA began at the age of 12 with the aim to escape boredom and forge new friendships. The local YMCA youth group became a regular fixture in her week, providing a welcoming space and opportunities to connect with peers. For several years, Laurie was an enthusiastic participant, benefiting from the activities and support offered at the YMCA North Tyneside. However, as she grew older, Laurie found herself with a newfound desire to work in childcare and decided to transition from participant to volunteer, looking to not only fill her time constructively but also gain valuable experience for her CV.

This decision proved to be transformative. Volunteering at the YMCA provided Laurie with a firsthand insight into the dynamics of working with young people. She actively supported a range of initiatives, from the weekly youth group sessions that had once been her own haven, to engaging summer activity programmes and various other community events.

To further broaden her involvement and develop her leadership skills, Laurie also actively participates in the YMCA Leaders for Life programme. This additional commitment has provided her with further opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and a deeper understanding of the YMCA’s values and impact within the North Tyneside community.

Through these experiences, Laurie developed crucial skills in communication, leadership, and teamwork. More importantly, her confidence blossomed. Taking on responsibility, guiding younger members, and contributing to the positive atmosphere of the YMCA allowed Laurie to discover her own capabilities and passion for working with children. She gained a practical understanding of the challenges and rewards of youth work, solidifying her ambition to pursue a career in childcare.

Laurie’s dedication and positive impact did not go unnoticed. Her commitment and enthusiasm shone through in all her volunteering activities and her engagement with the Leaders for Life programme. This dedication culminated in a significant achievement: Laurie was awarded the prestigious ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ award at the NE Youth Awards. This recognition is a testament to her personal growth, her commitment to the YMCA North Tyneside, and the valuable contribution she made to the lives of young people in her community.

Building on the invaluable experience and insight gained through her volunteering and participation in the Leaders for Life programme, Laurie is now pursuing her passion further by attending college to study childcare. Her extensive involvement with the YMCA has not only strengthened her application and provided real-world context to her studies but has also reinforced her commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of children in North Shields and beyond. Laurie’s story highlights the powerful impact of the YMCA in nurturing young people, guiding them from participants to active contributors, emerging leaders, and future professionals.
