IMPACT REPORT
2022 – 2023
A Year to Remember and Celebrate.
The 22/23 year saw us and our communities begin a time of recovery. During our YMCA’s 140+-year history, we’ve weathered world wars, great depressions and natural disasters and have learned that times of recovery present great opportunities. Whilst the events of the past 12 months certainly challenged our YMCA, we believe it was a catalyst for change. As a forward-thinking charity, we acknowledged and have come to terms with the complex social challenges in our communities: increased poverty, homelessness, addictions and a widespread mental health and resilience crisis.Â
While these issues have generally been a constant in our society, unfortunately, it took a worldwide pandemic, conflict and economic crisis for us to see the true depth of support our communities need to stay healthy, happy and connected.
In times of need, the YMCA has continually stepped up. YMCA North Tyneside has risen to meet the needs of our communities and is delivering programmes and services that provide life-changing support that is needed now more than ever. We’ve expanded in all of our services; housing and homelessness, youth and community, employment and family support across all the areas that our YMCA serves.Â
We’ve changed the way we think about our communities – we are embedded to make a difference for all:-
- Adapting our community and young people’s provision to meet current needsÂ
- Expanding and changing the mix of our housing provision as the landscape has changed since we began providingÂ
- Evolving the curriculum for our youngest children so they are best prepared to thrive for years to come
By bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives and generations, we have worked to build a welcoming, inclusive environment where all can have Hope, Belong, Contribute and Thrive.
We hope that this Impact Report shows how much we have to be proud of… and look forward to.
Thank you to our YMCA volunteers, staff, members, partners and advocates who make all of this possible.
Together, we can improve lives and connect communities.
Best wishes,
Dean Titterton, CEO and Arif Shahab, Chair of the Board of Trustees
COMMUNITY & YOUNG PEOPLE

YMCA’s first full year of partnering with Airplay, the RAF Benevolent Fund’s youth support scheme, has been a great success in supporting young people on base at RAF Leeming.
animating social issues
Our popular youth group in Jarrow, which sees 40+ young people attend weekly, brought to light issues facing those identifying as LGBTQ+ through the art of animation thanks to funding from the Violence Reduction Unit.

EARLY YEARS
Providing a supportive environment
The effects of the Covid pandemic are still being discovered, however, within our nursery we have seen a significant rise in children under 5 presenting with a variety of additional needs. Our team has risen to meet the need with extra training, provision and partnership work to help support each child with their particular needs.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
The benefits of the physical with mind
Realising the benefits of regular physical activity, MIND and YMCA have teamed up to support several groups over the past year to help them thrive in BODY and MIND.
Not just a gym, but a supportive community
Many of our gym members come not just for improving their physical health, but also because they feel part of the YMCA community. This is particularly true for one such member who had to leave home for cancer treatment, but felt the love of the community while away and even more so on his return ‘home’.
